In October 2023, MW Energy, a joint venture between UAE Masdar and W Solar Investment, a subsidiary of UAE-based Alpha Dhabi Holding, signed an agreement with the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan. The development of clean energy projects in Tajikistan will be initiated.

According to the agreement, the two companies will initiate the development of clean energy projects with a capacity of not less than 500MW in Tajikistan, which is located in landlocked Central Asia and rich in water resources, mainly including floating Photovoltaic Generator and hydropower. This 500MW Photovoltaic Systems project include the solar modules, ground solar mounting, inverter, etc.

Tajikistan is highly dependent on hydropower, which also offers great potential for the development and expansion of other types of renewable energy.

The collaboration is intended as part of a public-private partnership (PPP) that will focus on the development of Photovoltaic System, wind and hydropower projects. The planned capacity of the first phase of the project is not less than 500MW.

By 2030, the installed capacity of photovoltaic(include the solar panel mount) and wind power projects in Tajikistan will reach 700MW. At present, with the technical and financial support of various international consulting companies and international financial institutions, the government is actively carrying out project feasibility studies and plans to develop and build 450MW of them.

Masdar has developed several projects in Central Asia, including the largest wind farm in the region, the 500 MW Zarafshan wind power project in Uzbekistan.

Masdar has also completed the financing closure of three photovoltaic projects with ground mount solar bracket in Uzbekistan, located in Jizzakh, Samarkand and Sherabad, with a total capacity of approximately 900MW.
